Happy Valentine’s Day week! As a single person who has spent the better part of the last year alone in my apartment, I have read my fair share of romance novels. Got to keep the spark alive, right? In honor of Valentine’s Day, here are some sweet, steamy, and romantic recommendations to read this weekend.
To me, this is the quintessential fluffy, steamy romance novel you can read in a weekend. The novel follows two close-quarters coworkers (remember offices?) who are in competition for the same promotion and absolutely hate each other – or do they? It’s goofy and fun while still maintaining a lot of sexual tension and actually has a pretty surprising plot twist at the end. I think this would be the perfect feel-good Valentines Day book.
Recommend if you’re looking for: workplace romance, enemies-to-lovers, steamy, light romance
If you haven’t read this book yet, please do yourself an enormous favor and read it this weekend. It was probably my favorite book from 2020. If you have interests at the intersection of romance, royalty, and politics you will love this book. The story follows the son of the first woman US President and the Prince of Wales as their rivalry turns into, well, something else entirely. It sounds cheesy, I know, but it’s SO good.

So, I’m not sure if I would describe this book as romantic, but if you’re looking for a totally engrossing, read-in-one-weekend, sexy emotional rollercoaster then I whole-heartedly recommend The Idea Of You. The premise sounds ridiculous – sexy mom/art collector meets teen pop star at a meet-and-greet and embark on an a steamy affair – but I promise you it’s the romance novel you didn’t know you needed.
Recommend if you’re looking for: May-September romance, One Direction fan fiction, mature romance, steamy, Black author
P.S. I always encourage folks to buy books through local bookstores, but The Idea of You is available for $1.99 on Amazon Kindle right now! It’s also free on Kindle Unlimited, if you’re a member.
For those looking for more Literature, I recommend the classic romance novel Call Me By Your Name. While Armie Hammer may have ruined the movie for us (y’all, I can’t even), the book is stunning on it’s own and is both romantic and heartbreaking. Plus, if you miss traveling, the book’s Italian summer setting is the perfect escape. It’s the kind of book I wish I could read for the first time again.

Calling all Kate and Wills fans! The Royal We is a super fun, fan-fiction take on the romance between Kate Middleton and Prince William in their early years. While obviously there are some differences – the female lead is American, they’re at Oxford, not St. Andrews, etc. – this book will definitely pass muster if you’re a royal buff. It’s super well researched and there are lots of references to real rules, rumors, and facts about the royal family that are a total delight.
Recommend if you’re looking for: royals, light romance, British, travel
Another perfect Valentine’s Day read is this favorite of mine from last year! The messy, estranged son of rockstar and a fastidious lawyer concoct a plan to fake a relationship to help clean up Luc’s bad-boy image, but, of course, their entanglement becomes more complicated than they had originally thought. I love a fake-relationship plot line just like everyone else and this one delivers in the sweetest, most heartfelt way.
Recommend if you’re looking for: fake relationship, LGTBQ+ romance, British, opposites attract
The last book on my Valentine’s Day list is this passage-of-time romance, One Day in December. A lot of the plot takes place around Christmas, but this is truly a great, cozy read for any time of year, especially in the middle of really shitty winter. Laurie sees a boy at a bus stop and immediately falls in love – and unknowingly sets off a series of events that will shape the rest of her life. Taking place over a decade, this is a totally epic love story and will totally having you swoon at the end. Perfect for a V-Day read!
Recommend if you’re looking for: romance across time, star-crossed lovers, British, travel
